CARP
In July 1991, Pete caught Mary from Wraysbury at 45lb 6oz. The
following year he produced one of the great moments in carpfishing history when he caught Mary again at 47lb and Mary’s Mate
at 37lb 8oz within just three hours of each other. His remarkable
list of captures also included fish such as Basil, Heather and the
Sonning Eye.
Pete’s ability wasn’t confined to pursuing famous big carp. His
extraordinary consistency and watercraft were demonstrated
when he caught a carp from the surface in 48 consecutive calendar
months — four complete years, including through the winter
months.
In 2010, Pete was inducted into the Carp Fishing Hall of Fame,
recognition of an angling career that had already inspired
generations of carp anglers.
Despite those achievements,
Pete was renowned for being
understated and for keeping
himself away from the limelight.
His reputation was built on his
angling, his watercraft and the
respect he earned from fellow
anglers.British carp fishing has
lost one of its truly great figures.
Thoughts are with Pete’s
family, friends and all those who
knew him.
Rest in peace, Sir Pete
Springate. A pioneering angler
whose name will forever be part
of British carp-fishing history”
