to the bank. I flicked out three rods – one on the upstream margin, one in
front and down the shelf and with the other to the downstream margin. All
of them hand three or four big handfuls of Wraysbury Baits Red Hot Squid
and MCNut thrown around them. I had a few bream before it all went quiet,
and I got some kip.
I do remember waking up to a single beep on the middle rod, but I looked
at the motionless tip, dead straight up in the air and fell back to sleep. When I
awoke in the morning and looked at the rods, I knew something wasn’t right.
In the mist, I could see that the line from the middle rod was at the wrong
angle. It was going upstream and under the left-hand rod. I immediately
picked it up and started to reel it in. The line went under the boat and in
‘knit one, pearl one’ fashion through the branches of underwater trees, as
far upstream as I’d cast it out in front of me. I eventually got my rig back,
as whatever it was I’d had on had transferred me to a branch… None of the
bream had done that! It must have been a carp. Unfortunately, I didn’t get
