By then another well-known Thames angler had moved his boat on the
section, and as it turned out had been baiting the same spot. But after
exchanging a few messages, I decided to let him have it and concentrate the
little time I had left of the season a bit further upstream where I could fish
for barbel and carp – a bit of carbeling if you like, or as I don’t mind chub
and the same tactics are now used to catch them all, I coined the phrase
carbarchubling! There was actually one massive barbel I was after that Nikk
had caught at 18lb 12oz in the autumn, and it had done over 20lbs at the end
of the last season. I was still prebaiting with loads of Wraysbury Baits Red
Hot Squid but had now started to add pellet, as there were fewer bream in
the faster water, and I wanted something to break down and draw the fish
in. I’d had a few barbel to 10lb 8oz and small chub at the bottom of the weir
