FIELD NOTES
The temperature was rising to 28 and 30 degrees in the daytime, and a lot
of the fish weren't interested, so I decided to put 15kg of boilie and pellet
out into the swim and to rest it all day. I may as well do while it s warm, eh?
The rods went back out perfectly in the evening, ready for that night time
and morning period.
I woke up at first light after a silent night to look out over my spots and to
see one of them fizzing away like mad, which was the right hand channel
rod. One hour later, that rod went, and after a heavy fight, I had a hook pull
near the net. It seemed to look like a very big common! I was mega deflated
and gutted, as I knew it was a good fish and probably my only chance on the
Sunday morning because I make the journey home. But 15 minutes later,
the other channel rod bent around, and I was into my second bite of the
morning. My legs were like jelly as I saw the fish early on, and I knew it was
a chunk. After a hectic and very powerful fight, my good mate Ben Sellers
netted the big mirror, and I was back on cloud nine after being on a big
low. Ben verified the name of the fish, which Powers, and the weight, which
went 40lb 4oz. The fish certainly fought by its name! I was using simple
blowback rigs with size 4 Curve Shanks, semi-stiff braided hook link and a
Krill hardened hook bait with a pink topper.
